Chatting with a character
The chat is where the story unfolds. You write as your persona, the character replies, and at any moment you can rewrite a reply, turn the plot or start a branch over.
🧭 The chat screen
Section titled “🧭 The chat screen”- Message feed — your conversation with the character. A long story is split into pages that you can switch between.
- The at the bottom — this is where you type lines, actions and commands.
- The side panel on the right — everything related to this chat. If it is collapsed, expand it with the button in the top right corner. On a phone the panel opens separately.

✍️ Writing messages
Section titled “✍️ Writing messages”Speech
Section titled “Speech”Plain text is what your hero says. The character takes it as direct speech.
Actions
Section titled “Actions”Put the cursor in the message field and the and buttons appear above it. inserts asterisks * *. The text between them is shown in italics and means an action or a description:

/cmd commands
Section titled “/cmd commands”A line that starts with /cmd is an instruction for the AI, not something your hero says. It lets you hint where the plot should go without breaking the role. Click /cmd above the message field to insert a command, then type what you need:
/cmd Write in English— if the character has switched to another language;/cmd Describe the heroine’s feelings— to add emotion;/cmd Stop repeating yourself— if the replies start going in circles;/cmd Skip ahead to the morning— to fast-forward the scene.
A command affects the next reply. You can combine a command and a normal line in one message if you put them on separate lines.
Continue without replying
Section titled “Continue without replying”The button next to the empty message field asks the character to continue the story on its own, without a line from you. When there is text in the field, the send button takes its place. You can also send a message with the Enter key.
Suggestions and expanding a line
Section titled “Suggestions and expanding a line”Next to the message field there is an . It works differently depending on whether the field is empty:
- The field is empty — the button shows suggestions: several options for your reply. The option you pick goes into the message field, and you can adjust it before sending. Refresh the list with the button.
- The field has text — the button turns a short line into a detailed one. Type “I hug her and stay silent”, and the AI adds emotions and details in the style of the story.
Both features are free.
Voice input
Section titled “Voice input”The button in the empty message field lets you dictate a message. While recording, the button shows a crossed-out microphone — click it again to finish. The first time, the browser asks for permission to use the microphone, and you need to allow it. Voice input doesn’t work in every browser: if yours doesn’t support it, the site will say so.
🔁 What you can do with replies
Section titled “🔁 What you can do with replies”Under the character’s replies there is an action bar. Some buttons are under every reply, others only under the last one:

To rewrite an earlier reply, use Edit or start a new branch from the right place with New chat from here.
The menu of a message has more items:
- — copy the text;
- — rewrite the message;
- — start a new story branch from this point;
- — report an unacceptable reply;
- — remove the message from the history.
Your own messages have no “Complain” item. The character’s first message (the greeting) can’t be edited or deleted — you can only copy it, start a new chat from it or complain about it.
Editing
Section titled “Editing”You can edit both your own messages and the character’s replies. It is the fastest way to turn the plot: rewrite the reply the way the character should have said it, and the story continues with your changes in mind.
A new story branch
Section titled “A new story branch”New chat from here creates a copy of the chat up to the selected message. The original chat doesn’t change, so you can try a different turn of events and go back to the old one if you don’t like the new one.
Ratings
Section titled “Ratings”Ratings help improve the replies. After a rating of three or four stars you can mark what you liked (funny, interesting, good memory and so on). After a rating of one or two stars a form opens where you can describe the problem.
🗂️ Chat history
Section titled “🗂️ Chat history”All your conversations are in the section of the left menu. You can find a chat . The shows the character, your persona, the last message, when you last wrote and how many messages the chat has. Under it are three buttons:
- — go back to the chat where you left off;
- — open the character page to start a new chat with it;
- — delete the chat.
Chats with a particular character are also shown on its page, in the block.
To start the story with a character from scratch, click New chat in the side panel: the old chat is kept.
⏳ Queue and response speed
Section titled “⏳ Queue and response speed”At peak hours, requests to the AI are queued. If the wait gets long, CAICHAT shows the estimated time and your position in the queue, and you can cancel the generation. With a subscription there is no queue. More in Plans.
Without a subscription, a above the message field says “The standard models have delays due to high usage.” You can close it with the cross, and it won’t appear again in this browser.
The “Low quality model” label
Section titled “The “Low quality model” label”Replies from the basic free models carry the label. It is a hint: other models may give more detailed and smarter replies. If you click the label without a subscription, the site shows the plans; with a subscription it opens the model picker. If the character’s creator has locked the model, the picker won’t open.
💡 Tips for a good story
Section titled “💡 Tips for a good story”- Set the tone from the first messages. Detailed lines with actions lead to equally detailed replies.
- Edit instead of arguing. If the character said something wrong, it is faster to edit the reply than to explain the mistake to it.
- Switch models. Different models write differently: one keeps the character better, another describes scenes better. See Models and behavior.
- Pin what matters in memories. If the character forgets key facts, add them to memories.
❓ Related questions
Section titled “❓ Related questions”The character keeps repeating itself. What should I do?
Regenerate the reply with the button or edit it. If the repetition continues, send the /cmd Stop repeating yourself command or try another model. Ask the character to continue without your line (the button) less often: several continuations in a row are the most common cause of repetition.
The character replies in another language. How do I get English back?
Type the /cmd Write in English command and send it together with your line or as a separate message. Regenerating the reply also helps.
Can I undo deleting a message or a chat?
No, deletion can’t be undone. If you want to try a different turn of events without deleting the history, use New chat from here.
Why doesn’t voice over work?
Voice over for replies is available on the Story GOD plan. If you have that plan but there is no sound, try again later: the voice service may be temporarily unavailable.
